All the Better to Eat you With

Kylar sat back in the snow watching the wolf lick at its injury. He expected the great beast to run off now that it was free again. Instead, it stalked toward him. Kylar backed away slowly, his eyes fixed on the silver form in front of him. Rough bark pressed into his back as a tree blocked his escape. He braced for the worst. But the wolf just stepped closer, bringing it muzzle to nose with Kylar.

Gold met green and a warm, deep voice echoed in Kylar’s head, “Stop looking at me like I’m going to eat you…”

“You can speak!”

The wolf nodded its massive head. “Only to you, my bonded, my wizard.”

“You’re a familiar...” Kylar reached out cautiously to touch the wolf’s thick, silver fur.

“Your familiar, actually.” The wolf licked his cheek. “I’ve been waiting for you...”

“You can’t be mine... I’m not even a real wizard.” Kylar pushed the wolf away. “I couldn’t even pass my test to journeyman.”

“It doesn’t matter, you have magic.” The wolf added as it stretched, “And now you have me.”

“I can’t. You should find some one else.” Kylar muttered, shaking his head.

“There is no ‘finding someone else...’ you are mine.”
