“Are you still open?” The man asked with a hopeful look. “The sign said you closed at one-thirty but I wasn’t sure.”
“Y-yeah, we’re open.” Rian bowed a little. “Please, have a seat.”
“Thanks.” The man glanced around and headed for the counter near the kitchen. He sat on one of the worn wooden stools and grinned at Rian. “I’m starving.”
Rian blinked as he handed the man a menu. The almond shaped eyes set in that handsome face were golden and slitted like a cat’s, and Rian noticed an extra set of canine teeth when the man smiled. That meant one of two things; either his customer had a thing for unusual body modifications or he wasn’t quite human. Rian brushed that last thought off. It wasn’t like anyone like that would ever come here. “Can I get you something to drink?”
“Hot tea, please.”
“Sure thing.” Tea went into the pot and Rian ducked back into the kitchen for some hot water. He set a cup on the counter and filled it with steaming green tea, all the while trying not to stare too much. “Here you go.”
“Thank you.” The man glanced up from his menu. “Is there something wrong? You keep staring at me.”
“Sorry.” Rian bowed his head again. A bit of dark blond hair slipped free of his bandana, and tickled Rian’s nose. “I just--I’ve never seen eyes like yours before.”
“I would hope not. This city is my territory and I would hate to think that there was another dragon lurking around.” The man grinned again. “I’m Taishaku, by the way. You can call me Tai, if it’s easier.”
“I’m Rian.” Rian paused. He didn’t hear what he thought he did. Did he? “Wait a minute, did you just say you were a dragon?”
